5 Ways to Give Back to Our Communities

Our communities are one of the most important elements in our lives. Our communities contribute to our work environments, personal environments and are where we call home. Giving back to our community is one of the most powerful ways to create positive growth and stimulation within ourselves and others. How we give back will look different for each of us, and what we are passionate about supporting may be unique to our experiences. Just remember that no act of kindness is too small or unimportant. Here are 5 ways to give back to our communities.

1. Volunteer

Donate your time and volunteer. Volunteering is one of the simplest ways to create a big impact in our communities. If you have regular free time in your schedule maybe sign up for a weekly volunteer shift. If you have a busy schedule, see if there is a local event that needs help for a day or two. And the best part about volunteering? All you need is you.

2. Monetary Donation

Monetary donations are always helpful in furthering community causes. This can be a great option if you have more disposable income than available time. Find an organization you like and see if there is a monthly donor program. This way your donation automatically happens every month and you know you are spending your money in a valuable manner.

3. Donate Items

We all have items in our homes that we don’t use anymore (or maybe never used). Items that are in good condition are a valuable asset to many community run organizations such as shelters, recovery groups, etc. There are even organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity, that use your old jeans for insulation in new homes. A great way to implement regular donation habits is to do a spring and winter clean out. This way you have two designated times every year when you give away items you don’t use to someone who will.

4. Sponsor a Table

Sponsoring a table at a local charity event is a wonderful way to give tangible support to a community cause. This is especially helpful during an organization’s annual fundraising event where many donations are needed in order to fulfill the next year’s financial goals. If you need more information on what charitable organizations and events are in your area, check your local Chamber of Commerce website for listings.

5. Support Local Students

Paying a student’s way to a local school conference or event is an impactful way to give to the future of your community. Many students do not have the funds to attend extra curricular activities. Donating to college or high-school student organizations directly helps the next generation experience and learn about our world outside of the classroom.
